My 36th Birthday

Today started my 36th trip around the sun!  At first I was feeling a bit old today.  36.  Like, almost 40, essentially.  But then I remembered one of my goals is to grow old, so this is just one step along the way!  (Although if time wanted to perhaps slow down a bit I also wouldn't be complaining!)

The girls and I made a cake and while I was working out they decorated it with Brian and we all partook in cake festivities after dinner.

I've always loved having a May birthday.  It's the start of summer, school's out or almost out, and it's just an exciting time of year.  It felt no different this time!  Happy birthday, me!

Side note: My Dad is 63 this year.  My Mom is 60.  My brother is 33.  My daughter's are 6 and 3.  And I'm 36.  Lots of threes and sixes in 2018!

A Royal Party: Kate's 3rd Birthday!

Kate's 3rd birthday snuck up on me.  She's at that in between age where I can semi-ask what sort of party she wants to have but then I also get answers that vary from mermaids to animals and everything in between.  I'm also three months post partum from giving birth to Maya ... and this has been the first official month that Kate has been home with me, so, yeah, I'm a tad preoccupied with ... life .  I blinked and it was time to plan Kate's 3rd birthday.

In addition to party planning, we headed out of town to drive to Maryland right after the party, so there was that to figure out too.

In other words, my normal party prep involves a lot of homemade stuff.  This year, I at least got photo banner made and a princess invited!

Wwe decided on "A Royal Party".  Kate loves all things princess right now so we figure why not capitalize.  We invited Princess Belle, Kate's favorite princess over to join us for a little bit too.  #icingonthecake

We kept it pretty low key and had family over at our place to enjoy our time while we mingled and ate and spent some time with Princess Belle.  It wasn't as dazzling as past parties but it was a good time and we all had fun.  Kate has already planning on who she will be inviting to next year's party!

Without further ado, please check out the photos below for birthday party fun:

Oh, and to see Kate's past birthdays, click on the links below!

And in true Hendricks fashion, we also have a little video to commemorate this year too:

Kate's 1st birthday video
Kate's 2nd birthday video
Kate's 3rd birthday video

I'm not entirely sure how long we'll do videos but I'm glad I've done them so far!

Ok, for reals, Kate's 3rd birthday.  Below:

It's official!

The birthday girl enjoying a bite to eat before Belle arrived.
Which was a surprise, btw.

Kate was a little shy when Belle first arrived
but insisted on putting on her Belle dress!

And a little hand holding from Mama fixes everything, right?!

Belle brought Kate two presents - a cupcake ring and a
Princess story book!

Saying goodbye!  Even Maya was intrigued!

Goodbye, Belle!

Kate and Belle!

That's all I got.

Round Two

After our second little lady, Maya, was born (hence the "Round Two"), we spent two days at the hospital.  She was born in the wee hours on Wednesday morning, so we stayed until Friday.  Brian and I have nothing but positive things to say about Riverside's Labor and Delivery.  (Aside from the triage nurse but I'm not even going to go there.)

This time around, we BOTH could order meals from the room service option.  When we were in the hospital nearly three years ago with Kate only I was able to.  The nurses and assistants that worked with us on the labor and delivery floor were all so nice.  It really was a joy to be there.

I'm going to keep this relatively short and load you up with a bunch of photos but there are three distinct things that I wanted to note from our stay and labor that I noted while we were there:

1. Not having an epidural was AMAZING.  I was up and at'em the very day I had given birth to Maya.  I was able to walk around, to shower, to get things on my own, to check out my sleeping baby in the nursery while she was being checked on.  I felt great!  Trust me, I didn't mind being waited on hand and foot but knowing I was close to fully capable too made all the difference in the world.  The spinal headaches that I had with Kate were so debilitating that I was crying the day we left the hospital because I was so fearful that I couldn't manage at home.  #iwasright  #kindof

2. I had two distinct feelings/thoughts when we were in the hospital.  The first was in the wee hours of the morning.  The sun was stirring to rise, but it was early.  I laid with Maya, and, for a moment, wanted time to freeze.  I thought to myself that these moments in the hospital, where it is just her and I and Brian, with no other responsibility, are very lucky ones.  For when we get home, the plate piles full with - Kate, Jack, household chores, duties, work, cooking, playing, keeping sane, etc.  I was so peaceful in that moment, with her in my arms, while Brian slept on the sleep-couch, and the sun was barely awake.  It was a wonderful feeling.  But, just two seconds after that moment, I felt a deep sense of guilt for enjoying a moment without Kate and with her new sister.  That was my second feeling.  So I told myself to get it together, gave myself a little slap on the face for being an imbecile, and tried to get back to my moment.  Of course there are going to be moments, individually and together, that I'm going to enjoy immensely.  Of course Maya, Kate, and Brian will all experience these.  Of course I love Kate to no end.  And Maya too.  And Jack...while we're at it.  Get back to the moment, Erin.  There's not much time before you are back home and in the full swing of raising a toddler and a newborn.

3. About a month before I had Maya, I spoke to a friend of Brian's that recently became a doula.  She had said to me, "The first child gains from your attention.  The second gains from you experience.".  This hit a serious chord with me.  I am so thankful to have heard this little bit of knowledge because I had been worried my entire pregnancy just how I was going to do it with two kiddos - how I was going to love another, how I was going to manage, how I was going to explain things to both.  But all of that worrying was for nothing.  It all works out in the end, and Maya is certainly gaining from my experience, Brian's, and big sister, Kate's, without a doubt!  She is one lucky lady!

(Ok, maybe I won't keep it short...)

All in all, our hospital stay this go around was fabulous.  It was such a pleasure to stay at Riverside.  It was a pleasure to have Kate and a lot of our other family and friends come and visit us while we were there.  It was a pleasure to be waited on hand and foot.  And it was a pleasure to be able to share in some lovely moments together.  So, without further ado, please enjoy our hospital stay in photos!

39 Years Old

Happy Birthday, Brian!  My husband of almost five years just turned 39!  I officially started my maternity leave today so I picked Kate up a bit early and we headed to the grocery store to pick up our cupcakes and select some sprinkles to decorate them with.  Kate picked neon pink, green, and purple disc sprinkles and a Frozen balloon for Brian!  Wait.  Whose birthday is is again?!

Kate has been eyeing this Frozen helium balloon!  Every time we go into the grocery store together she points it out.  When I suggested we pick out a balloon for Daddy for his birthday she was all in and knew exactly which balloon she wanted to get him!  I'm sure Daddy appreciated Anna and Elsa wishing him a happy birthday too!

At 39, Brian is about to be a Daddy to his second daughter.  Prior to me being on leave, Brian would get Kate ready and fed and dropped off at school in the morning and then head into work.  He's been working at a corporate company for about 1.5 years and I think he loves it.  The corporate game is totally up Brian's alley and he is always coming home with positive accolades and glowing progress reports.  While I don't think this is his dream job, I think he has learned a lot from the role he is in and the company he is with and continues to grow both professionally and personally.

He's usually home around 5:15-5:30 and we usually all have dinner together.  He is still an AVID sports enthusiast and a social networker!  He is determined and loving and caring and positive and strong willed and his (almost) three girls mean the world to him!

(While I secretly hoped Little Sister would arrive on July 4th, I think Brian secretly hoped Little Sister would arrive on his birthday - July 13th!  Little Sister has plans to arrive on her own day.  Whatever day that might be it will be the perfect one!)

Birthday dinner over the weekend with Tom and Mary!

Decorating Daddy's birthday cupcakes!

Cupcake perfection!

Kate performs a bit of quality control!

I kind of want to too!

Brian's stash!

Brian's birthday love!

We love you to bits, Bri, and hope you enjoyed your 39th birthday!  Next year, we'll be celebrating a 40th birthday and a 1st birthday around the same time!  Brian says we can celebrate the 1st birthday during the day and the 40th at night...

(Between you and me, I think it might take him 40 days to recover from that one if that is really what happens!!!)
